Hazard Identification Module

Strategies for seeing beyond what you normally see

Strategies and Techniques to Avoid Missing Key Data and Risks

Visual inattentiveness hinders hazard identification. Experienced employees sometimes operate on auto-pilot, often repeating the same routines. In the process, they can miss hazards – both minor and major. Risk assessments and hazard hunts often suffer from being rushed, conducted with an element of complacency, or taken for granted. But all forms of hazard identification suffer from gaps in Visual Literacy. The unintentional “blinders” that can lead to a failure to see hazards. This same gap can also lead to poorly written hazard identification reports and ineffective communications, all of which can create misinterpretations and reduce your ability to work as a team to mitigate risks.

This module teaches you how to see and describe potential hazards using objective language. You will learn how to implement Visual Literacy in your current risk management practices, such as JSAs, Pre-Task Assessments, and Hazard Hunts.

Program Overview

In this module, you’ll learn how visual inattentiveness hinders hazard identification. You’ll look at how poorly written hazard identification reports and communications create misinterpretations and can reduce your ability to work as a team to mitigate risks. The training module is very interactive and high energy, with participants identifying hazards and sharing information on assessments and hazards that were missed. You are immersed in Seeing Differently. Groups participate in exercises to learn the importance of using specific, objective language to describe and communicate risks.

Participants will:

  • Identify current challenges with hazard identification processes and tools
Review the Elements of Art and Seeing the Whole PICTURE™
  • Practice recognizing the Elements of Art
  • Evaluate potential hazards in still images using the Elements of Art and Seeing the Whole PICTURE™
  • Describe potential hazards and risks using objective language
  • Plan how to implement Visual Literacy in current risk management practices (JSAs, Pre-Task Assessments, etc.)

  • Facilitator guide
  • Presentation deck
  • Participant workbooks
  • Accompanying exercises
